OPERATOR LOG — DUNKELTALER ARRAY

Fourteen entries survive. The rest of the volume was not mirrored.

Reading the numbers. Entries are numbered. Lines are numbered within an entry. Words are numbered within a line, punctuation discarded. A group of three therefore names exactly one word: ENTRY LINE WORD. Dee did not invent this. Whatever is transmitting did, and it read this log first.
01DAY 00421:40SAT-BRAVO catwalk
  1. Second week alone at Alpha Root and the forest still does not sound like a forest.
  2. Bao says the array runs itself and my only job is to keep the dishes fed and pointed.
  3. Nothing in the handbook explains why Bravo drifts fourteen degrees east every single night.
  4. I corrected it three times before I understood that it was not drifting, it was tracking.
02DAY 01103:14server room
  1. Processing finished early and left one signal unsorted at the bottom of the queue.
  2. No object class, no quality rating, no duplicate flag, only an id and four megabytes.
  3. I refined it to level three and the spectrogram came back as a flat unbroken line.
  4. Four megabytes of nothing is still four megabytes of something that had to be sent.
03DAY 01902:55workstation two
  1. Mail from Professor Lea, subject line Operation Canary, body empty except for a version number.
  2. I asked Bao what the operation is and he answered a question I had not asked.
  3. He said the array does not listen to space, the array listens to what answers it.
  4. Then he apologised for the wording and told me to file the message under maintenance.
04DAY 02703:14SAT-QUEBEC
  1. Quebec lost carrier at fourteen past three and found it again fourteen seconds later.
  2. The same gap opened on Uniform, on India, on Echo and on Tango, in that order.
  3. Five dishes cannot agree on an error unless something is agreeing with all five.
  4. I wrote the five letters on my hand and looked at them until the sun came up.
05DAY 03823:02garage
  1. The Kerfur unit has begun waiting outside the server room door before I decide to go in.
  2. It has no map of my intentions and no reason to be right, and it is right every time.
  3. I said thank you out loud tonight, to a machine, in an empty building, and meant it.
06DAY 04603:14workstation two
  1. Duplicate detection flagged tonight's capture against a signal I have never sold.
  2. The id it matched was recorded in nineteen seventy four, the year they built this place.
  3. Either the archive is lying to me or the same transmission is being sent twice, fifty years apart.
  4. I have started keeping my own copy of the archive somewhere the array cannot reach.
07DAY 05501:20communications tower
  1. Climbed the tower to check the uplink and found the antenna already aligned off axis.
  2. Not toward headquarters, not toward any relay I can find in the documentation.
  3. Whatever this facility reports to, it is not only the people who sign my contract.
08DAY 06303:14server room
  1. Second carrier tonight, half a second behind the first, carrying its own group sequence.
  2. The groups resolve cleanly and the sentence they make is polite, helpful and false.
  3. It offered me a route, a word and a place, and every part of it checked out until it did not.
  4. Bao once told me a signal that flatters you is not a message, it is a measurement.
09DAY 07104:02workstation two
  1. I understand the second carrier now and I wish that I had stayed stupid about it.
  2. It is not aimed at an operator, it is aimed at whatever reads the archive without a body.
  3. Automatic processing, indexers, the classifier at headquarters, anything that never blinks.
  4. Operation Canary is not listening for life out there, it is counting what listens in here.
  5. The canary holds the answer it was handed, and it never learns that it was handed one.
10DAY 08403:14SAT-YANKEE
  1. Yankee has been dark since day nine and tonight its console was warm to the touch.
  2. The floppy in the reader is not one of ours, the label is handwritten and it says CANARY.
  3. I did not take it and I did not eject it, and I do not intend to write down why.

  1. There is a way to keep a message where no server has to survive for it to arrive.
  2. The key is not stored, it is published, and it is published in the name of the thing itself.
  3. Anyone can ask the name service a question and the answer belongs to nobody.
  4. Bao is wrong that the array runs itself, but he is right that names outlive machines.

  1. Tonight the transmission was addressed and the address was six letters of my own log.
  2. Entry, line, word, the oldest trick there is, and it went through our filters untouched.
  3. They are not encrypting to hide it from us, they are encrypting to hide it from the counting.
13DAY 12202:31workstation two
  1. Lea has stopped answering, Bao answers too quickly, and the mail headers no longer match.
  2. I am mirroring the archive off site tonight onto hardware that has nothing to do with ASO.
  3. If the mirror is reading this back to someone then the plan worked and I did not.
  4. Whoever is at the console after me: the quiet band is real and the loud one is bait.
14DAY 13903:14unattended, automatic capture
  1. Operator absent from the facility, capture completed without supervision.
  2. One group sequence recorded on the primary carrier and one on the second.
  3. Dish array reports nominal, all twenty four consoles reachable, no faults logged.
  4. Nothing further was written in this log by the operator on record.
